Converting Maya FBX Files

Maya is used for a lot of 3D modeling. Modelers frequently save their completed work in a FBX file. FBX is a proprietary format designed by Autodesk (check this). In addition to the model, it contains the textures, rigging, and animation. It is a very convieient format, if you have an appropriate library of other tool to unpack it. Blender is an open-source modeling program. There is an FBX importer in Blender that handles many of the features and variations of the FBX format. Daly Realism is providing an FBX to X3D converter using the capabilities of Blender. This online converter accepts FBX files and converts it to X3D. The limitations are those of Blender.

The tool is called FBX Converter and is currently in alpha release. Files are uploaded and stored with a crytpic URL; however, these are not secured from world access. Do not upload a model that has restricted access. There is no guarnatee that it will be protected. Once converted you can view the X3D model on line and through a stereographic interface. See the post on Gooogle Cardboard for more details.
